Marked with Pattern and Texture, Hula's Murals Appear to Emerge from the Sea

December 28, 2021

All images © Sean Yoro, shared with permission To paint his murals, Sean Yoro, aka Hula, yields to the shifting tides of the ocean. The Los Angeles-based artist (previously) paddles out to underpasses and concrete barriers only accessible by water where he balances on a surfboard with a minimal number of supplies—all paints, brushes, and other materials have to fit within the 10-foot space. There he renders portraits of women half-submerged in the sea and singular hands that appear to burst from the surface. “I had to learn not only a faster and more efficient way to paint while on…

Impasto-Style Brushstrokes Hover Mid-Air in Illustrative Murals by Sean Yoro

March 4, 2020

All images © Sean Yoro Hawaii-born artist Sean Yoro (previously), aka Hula, pairs his illustrative murals of partial figures with bold brushstrokes that hover along building walls. Part of his Undertones series, the monochromatic pieces often feature singular hands and torsos as they reach toward or attempt to grasp the impasto-style strokes. One especially illusory piece forgoes the bodily element and instead focuses on a singular blue stroke that seems to float through the air and cast a shadow on the brick wall behind it. “Each large scale brushstroke represents the unique passions we all hold within and what we…

“HO’I MAI” Artist Sean Yoro, also known as Hula (previously), seems to be more comfortable on his paddle board than on ground, placing murals in hard to reach places, like underpasses and the side of a sinking ship. It is these seaside backdrops that he creates his hyperrealistic portraits, images of woman that peek above the water when the tide is just right. The tide was the original inspiration for his new ship-based piece Ho’i Mai. The piece features a woman with arm outstretched, reaching beyond her position in the water. The piece’s title which translates to “Come Back” alludes…

Artist Sean Yoro Paints Meticulous Seaside Murals While Balancing on His Paddle Board

May 21, 2015

Kate Sierzputowski

Riding atop a paddle board, artist Sean Yoro (aka Hula), paints murals while floating on the waves, placing his works just above sea level. The murals, all portraits of women, have a hyperrealistic quality that appear as if each is existing just above the tide. Due to the works’ position above the water they reflect perfectly into the waves, the image extending out far from the painted surface. The NYC-based artist paddles out to paint the murals, balancing his acrylic paint on his board all the while. Hula grew up on the island of Oahu, where he spent most of…
